Online Series: Investing in the Legal U.S. Cannabis Market
The first portion of the program will provide an overview of the U.S. cannabis industry. The second session will feature a round table discussion with local industry experts on investment opportunities in the space.
Providing the overview is Mina Mishrikey, CFA, Senior Partner of Merida Capital Holdings. Mina joined Merida in September of 2018 and heads the Funds’ investment team. He serves on the board of several portfolio companies, including Henry’s Original, Canadian Rockies Hemp Corporation, and Pantry Food Co. Prior to joining Merida, he co-founded and served as CFO of Philagrow, a Pennsylvania-based medical marijuana company. Mina spent the bulk of his career doing Investment Banking advisory work, most recently at Deutsche Bank from 2006 to 2017, where he led the North American structured finance derivatives business. Mina obtained a B.S. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with a Finance concentration.
Howard Goodwin, MD. For the last 18 years, Dr. Goodwin has demonstrated a proven acumen investing in healthcare businesses at top investment firms, including Maverick Capital, Citadel Investments and, most recently, as a portfolio manager at Millennium Partners. Dr. Goodwin began his investment career at Graham Partners, a middle-market private equity firm. Prior to beginning his investment career, Dr. Goodwin received his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University.
Brooke Hayes has over 24 years of corporate finance and private equity experience including roles in fundraising, corporate development, underwriting, structuring, portfolio management, executive leadership, and board governance. His diverse transaction background includes over $500 million of direct investments and numerous investment banking engagements across the technology-enabled services, financial services, software, consumer, and energy sectors. Since 2017, Brooke has been providing CFO, COO, and advisory services primarily to the cannabis and hemp industry through Meadowbrook Capital Advisors LLC for a variety of clients.
Prior to Meadowbrook, Brooke was a Partner and COO at Milestone Partners, a middle-market private equity firm focused on the financial services, business services, and tech-enabled solutions sectors from 2002 to 2017. During his tenure at Milestone, the firm managed over $650 million of original capital commitments and closed over 30 platform investments. Previous to Milestone, Brooke was an Associate in the Technology Services Group at JPMorgan H&Q in San Francisco, CA, joining after he received his MBA. Prior to business school, Brooke was an Analyst at the Stratum Group, an upstream oil and gas investment fund providing structured finance to support the acquisition of reserves and development, from 1995 to 1997. Brooke began his career at First Fidelity Bank where he received formal credit training and served as an Analyst and Team Leader.
Brooke received his BS in Economics and MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Brooke serves as Co-President of the Wharton Private Equity & Venture Capital Association and Vice-Chair of the Abington Education Foundation.
Emerald Park is a private platform with more of a debt focus, which is somewhat unique in Cannabis, equity investment has largely driven the industry to date as banks and traditional debt solutions are challenging given federally illegal status.
